IPTV EPG programme guide showing blank schedule on UK Smart TV

The IPTV EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) is the on-screen TV guide that shows what’s playing now and what’s coming up on each channel. When the IPTV EPG is not working — showing blank rows, wrong times, or failing to load at all — it doesn’t stop channels playing, but it makes navigating your IPTV service significantly harder. Here’s how to fix it.

How IPTV EPG Works (and Why It Breaks) #

Unlike traditional TV guides that come embedded in the broadcast signal, IPTV EPG data is fetched separately from a dedicated EPG server — often an XMLTV format file. Your IPTV app downloads this file, parses it, and matches the programme data to your channel list. If any step in this chain fails — the EPG URL is down, the file is malformed, the channel IDs don’t match — the IPTV EPG stops working for some or all channels.

Fix 1 — Force Refresh the EPG #

The simplest fix when the IPTV EPG is not working is a forced refresh. In TiviMate: Settings → EPG → Force EPG Update. In IPTV Smarters: Settings → EPG Settings → Refresh EPG. In GSE Smart IPTV: long-press a channel → Reload EPG. The EPG server may have been temporarily unavailable when your app last attempted to download the guide; a manual force refresh fetches a fresh copy.

Fix 2 — Check Your EPG URL #

If your IPTV provider uses a separate XMLTV URL for the EPG, verify it is still valid. Open the EPG URL in a browser — if you get an error or an empty page, the URL has changed or the server is down. Contact your provider for an updated EPG URL. Providers sometimes change EPG server addresses during infrastructure updates without notifying customers, which causes IPTV EPG failures overnight with no apparent trigger.

Fix 3 — Reduce EPG Days Loaded #

Many IPTV apps default to loading 7–14 days of EPG data at once. For large channel lists (500+ channels), this can produce XMLTV files exceeding 100MB — too large for some devices to parse before timing out, causing the IPTV EPG to not work or show partial data. In TiviMate, reduce the EPG days to 3 under Settings → EPG → Days to Load. This dramatically reduces parse time and resolves timeout-related EPG failures on slower devices.

Fix 4 — Fix Channel Mapping #

An IPTV EPG that loads successfully but shows data on the wrong channels indicates a channel ID mapping mismatch. The XMLTV file uses channel IDs that must match the IDs in your M3U playlist. If your provider updated the playlist without updating the EPG, or vice versa, channels and their programme data become de-synced.

In TiviMate, you can manually remap channels: long-press a channel → EPG → Select Channel from EPG. If all channels are affected, request a fresh matched playlist + EPG URL pair from your provider.

Fix 5 — Clear App Cache and EPG Database #

A corrupted local EPG database causes the IPTV EPG to not work despite successful downloads — the app displays the old broken data rather than fetching fresh data. Clear the app’s cache (Settings → Apps → [IPTV app] → Clear Cache), then also look for an option to delete the local EPG database within the app settings. TiviMate has a “Delete EPG Data” option under Settings → EPG. After clearing, force a fresh download.

Fix 6 — Check Your Device’s Date and Time #

XMLTV EPG data is heavily time-dependent — all programme times are absolute timestamps. If your device’s clock is wrong by more than a few minutes, the EPG parser may display all data as expired or show programmes offset by hours. Ensure your device is set to automatic time synchronisation. On Fire TV: Settings → Device → Date & Time → Automatic Time Zone On.

Fix 7 — Switch to a Catchall EPG Source #

If your provider’s EPG is persistently not working, use a third-party XMLTV source as a fallback. EPG Share (epgshare01.online) and i.mjh.nz provide XMLTV feeds covering UK channels including BBC, ITV, Sky Sports and Channel 4. Enter the XMLTV URL in your app’s EPG settings and remap your channels to the new source. This keeps your IPTV EPG functional independently of your provider’s EPG server uptime.

Frequently Asked Questions #

Why does my IPTV EPG work on some channels but not others?
Partial IPTV EPG failure — where some channels have guide data and others are blank — usually indicates a channel ID mapping problem. The channels with blank EPG have IDs in your playlist that don’t match any entry in the XMLTV file. The fix is either remapping individual channels manually in your app or requesting a fresh matched playlist from your provider.

How often should the IPTV EPG update?
A well-configured IPTV EPG updates every 12–24 hours. If your guide shows programme data more than 24 hours out of date, the automatic update is failing. Check your app’s EPG update schedule settings and verify the EPG URL is still responsive.

Can I use IPTV without an EPG?
Yes — your channels play normally without EPG data. The guide is a convenience feature, not a requirement. If fixing the IPTV EPG is proving complex, disable EPG loading temporarily to keep the app responsive while you troubleshoot, then re-enable it once you have a working EPG URL.
